Can't install Acrobat 3 in Mac OS 9.2.2 on G4 eMac

May 21, 2007 8:53AM PDT

I just purchased Acrobat 3 on a CD, but cannot install it on my eMac G4 either on the Classic (OS 9.2.2) system startup, or on the Tiger 10.4.9. Instructions say you can't install from the CD, but I also don't see any icon for Install Adobe Acrobat 3.0 to double click.

I tried double-clicking everything--both in Classic and Tiger, but
no go. I even made a disc image of the CD and tried that.

Before I bought the Acrobat 3.0 for Mac, I read the system requirements, and didn't see why it shouldn't work on my computer. In fact, I got the 3.0 because I run QuarkXpress 4.11 and Photoshop 4.1 in Classic, and didn't see why Acrobat 3.0 shouldn't work.

Thanks a lot, Morty Sklar

If this was a purchase from Adobe, or their authorized resellers, there should be full and complete instructions, along with an installer, on the CD.
What are these instructions that say you cannot install from the CD? Seems a little strange that the program should be on a CD but the instructions say you cannot install it from one.

Where did this CD come from?

Do you have a Serial Number for this software? Would it be close to this number AEE300R1100002-xxx

I purchased the whole deal in the original (opened) box, and it contains original CD and CD holder with registration sticker on it (KWW300.........), and a Getting Started pamphlet. The Serial Number is different-looking than yours but this is a 1997 piece of software.

However, the box and CD holder have only W (Windows) on them even thought the box has Mac sys. req. on it, as does the PDF on the disk (one of the few things I could open).

Do you think there would be another disk just for Mac? I called Adobe and went to Adobe forums but no answer yet.

As to not being able to install from the CD--maybe I didn't phrase that right. What it means is (and I've had other, older, software where you had to do the same thing), you have to copy it to your hard drive and install from there. In fact, I went through that a few months ago with Word 2001, a Classic (OS 9.2.2) app.

doubt on the authenticity of the software. We get a lot of questions where the software is on the darker side of legitimate.

You may indeed have a Windows copy of the software. If you have a WinBox available, try the CD in there. You should, on the Mac, be able to see all the files on that disk but on a WinBox they may appear differently.

PDF files cross the OS divide easily but applications do not, but you know that.

As for the installation techniques, starting with Office 98, MS went to an installer free option for Office for Mac. You just dragged the entire Office 98 folder off the CD and into the applications folder of your machine. When first launched, the app ran a "first time use" routine that installed the necessary extensions and fonts.
They are still doing the same with the OS X versions of Office, although there is also an installer if you fee the need or need extra functionality.

That's okay, P...

That's okay--I should have made sure that people knew I had the real thing. I was thinking that maybe a possible M disk was omitted--but even the Adobe box only has a W on it--but has Mac info. Go figure. I'll go back to the seller and see if he can help. Thanks again, Morty
