Can't get Skype to connect!!

I've been trying to download Skype on my Acer Aspire 5100 vista laptop. I can download the software but it will not let me create a new skype account or connect. I've tried contacting Skype but it is a 24 hour turn around by email only. Their suggestions have not worked so I'm hoping for solutions here. I tried rebooting my home router, tried connecting through an air card, disabled fire walls, filters and anti-virus. I've downloaded, unloaded and downloaded the software several times, waited, rebooted my computer to try and connect and nothing. I can't think of anything else to try. My son needs this for school and I really need this up and running by tomorrow. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much in advance.
