can't get rid of it

I have a HP laptop. Norton is installed when I bought it. Bought the newest cd rom for it installed it. It finds at risk files but wouldn't delete them. I changed it so that it sends them to quarintine then manually remove them. Have I deleted them from my computer? I have spydoctor and spyware on it but doesn't seem to be stopping pop-ups. Tried shredder it only found 2 things to get rid of. Is it possible something could be hiding in my recycle box? When I check my recycle box it says that I have 2 items in it. I clean it out yet it doesn't go away. When I try to look at what is in there nothing shows up!! Any help on this would be appreciated. thanks

Hi Eagle

These applications remove certain things but not all of them so you need to use them all. It looks like you have more than one problem. I would try ALL of these to start off with. Also, letting us know what your operating system is would help too. IF it is ME or XP you are going to have to purge that after you are all cleaned up. If any of these applications finds anything that they can not fix, find out exactly what it is and where it is. You might also need a trojan remover but you have enough to do with just these for now. Good luck and please let us know how you are doing.

Spybot S&D (download, check for updates, read the tutorial and scan often, it also does some blocking)

Ad-Aware SE (a scanner, download, check for updates, read the directions and scan.

cwshredder (stand alone unit)(another small scanner for certain things, ALL other windows should be closed)

Also do an online scan at one or all of these.
On the first one, make sure you checkmark the box that says "autoclean"

Housecall (using IE with Active-X)

Re: can't get rid of it

I went through the same thing. IE popup blocker is useless. To solve the problem once and, for all download and install either Firefox 1.0 or Netscape 7.2 and make one of theses your default browser. I personally went with Firefox 1.0.

Once in Quarantine area of Norton, you can safely delete them from Quarantine area. Just make sure that the file is really infected file. In Quarantine area of Norton, you will see the name of the threat (name of worm, trojan, adware etc). Delete them if you like. Keeping it there is no problem too since it is being held already and it wont do harm anymore.

What type of pop-ups? Is it Internet Explorer pop-ups or WIndows pop-ups?
If it is IE pop-ups, try to use other browser that has ability and effectively blocks. Opera, Firefox, Mozilla. Are you using XP SP2?
You can also use:
hpHOSTS File - http://www.hosts-file.net/

If it is Windows pop-ups, Shoot The Messenger - http://grc.com/stm/shootthemessenger.htm

To to configure the system to show hidden files and folders - http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html
See if it anything in recycle bin shows up after doing that.

Does your Norton AV came with System Works? If yes, it has Norton Protected Recycle Bin. Try to disable that option in Norton. If it is standalone Norton AV, you don't have Norton protected recycle bin feature.
