Can't get IE or Messenger to work...

Apr 13, 2005 4:33AM PDT

I've been trying to get a computer to connect to IE and MSN Messenger without luck.

With IE, I get a "page cannot be displayed message". With Messenger I get a message saying is can't connect bc IE can't connect and an error code of 81000363 (for which MS support has no information).

I presumed I needed to alter the Internet Options/Connections configurations to fix this, but both the LAN settings and Dial Up settings are all greyed out, so you can't select/alter anything.

I can get online using Firefox, but not IE.

Have also run Ad-Aware to ensure spyware isn't causing the problem.

Can anyone suggest something to fix this!?

Thanks,
Gus

No OS noted, and the forum tip not followed. Not easy.

Hey Bob,

I saw the page you mentioned and like the original poster confirms, it is the right error code, but can't find any info on how to correct it. I'm using XP.

Cheers,

Gus

Should've mentioned, I've also checked to ensure that the browsers not got "Work Offline" selected!

Have you tried IEFIX and the various SPYBOT, ADAWARE, STINGER and ADAWARE scans?

I've now done IEFIX and scanned for spyware, but no joy - still won't sign me in Sad

Any other suggestions? Thanks,

Gus

Progress!!!
Apr 13, 2005 7:57AM PDT

Now you are reporting "still won't sign me in" and this is definite progress from your first post where you wrote "page cannot be displayed message".

These are 2 entirely different issues and could be some FIREWALL you installed.

You need to know I offer ZERO support for firewall configurations. It's up to Zonelabs to do that or whoever you chose.

Not really...

Bob,

I'm afraid what I meant by "still won't sign me in" is that I still can't either get IE to display pages or MSN Messengers to sign in. So no progress. There's no firewall.

Sorry, can't help.
Apr 14, 2005 12:58AM PDT

Here's why.

I depend on your posts to be as accurate as possible. Your first and subsequent post's change in behaviour showed progress which means that we were having an effect.

I wonder if you could post a HIJACKTHIS log so I can get a clean look under the hood?

If not, then I wish you the best in fixing it.

If I find a solution from another source...

I'll post it here. Best of luck. Likewise if you find a solution, I'm all ears!

This worked for me
May 1, 2005 3:17AM PDT

I use XP Pro. I had installed MSN 7.0. I noticed that 4.7 was still installed under Add/Remove Windows Components so I uninstalled it there. Then I followed the steps provided by MSN help below and was able to successfully log in.

1.In the notification area on the taskbar (near the clock), click the MSN Messenger icon , and then click Exit.

2.Clear your Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) cache by doing the following:
-On the taskbar, click Start, and then click Control Panel.
-Click Network and Internet Connections.
-Click Set up or change your Internet connection. <<Or Internet Options if in Classic View>>.
-Click the Content tab.
-Under Certificates, click Clear SSL State.
-When you receive a confirmation, click OK.

3.Preregister DLL files that are associated with Cryptographic Services by doing the following:
-On the taskbar, click Start, and then click Run.
-Copy the following, and paste it into the Open box:
regsvr32 softpub.dll wintrust.dll initpki.dll
-Click OK.

When you receive each confirmation, click OK. The third confirmation may take a minute to appear, depending on your computer.

After the third confirmation, restart MSN Messenger and try to sign in again.

I haven't restarted yet, so I don't know if it's a permanent fix. Good luck.

IE will not connect to Internet; all other software does so
May 24, 2005 2:15PM PDT

I had this same problem, suddenly, on my laptop. I thank youfor the "encrption" clue that worked to solve my problem. I have some encryption software that uses IE to establish secure contact to a web service that I use in my business.

For some unknown reason, my special (non-IE) sign-on process icon lost track of the .epf file that allowed me to process my password and establish a secure connection with IE. After searching my disk and repointing the icon to the .epf file, my IE problems disappeared. The problem arose without any activation or use of this secure service.

??

Good luck to all.
