Can't get by Boot Problem

Mar 8, 2004 1:24PM PST

I am rebuilding my old computer, I am moving parts from my sister's almost 10 year old computer. Over to my 766mhz hp pavilion 7840. I replaced the hard drive which was orginally 30 gig, and put the 120 gig western digital hard drive in its place. The only thing I really moved from my sister's old computer is the cd-rom. I did move a ethernet card over, but kept getting operating system not found. So I took it out, the computer has no cards just a motherboard,cd-rom,hard drive, along with a power source.

My problem seems to be either two things

1. my keyboard locks up on me telling me to unlock it but have no clue how to do that. 0213 i believe the code is

2. I get by the much aggrvating keyboard lock, but the screen turns completly blank I hear a beep and thats it.

I can't even use the cd-rom to load any sort of programs

The keyboard I use is a multimedia GE keyboard just bought it

Please help me out I am getting rather aggrvated

1. Unplug the hard drive you spoke of from the computer.

2. Place a correct Emergency Startup/EBD disk in the floppy and start the computer.

Note: Ensure however that the CMOS/BIOS recognizes this boot situation.

3. What happens?

4. Is the 120GB drive new and has it never has been formatted?

I sort of came to that conclusion as well problem is I have no floppy drive, just a cd- rom. In addition it does not appear I am getting power to anything either except the motherboard

NT - Depends on computer, it may boot from CD-ROM -- with power to it.

see thats my problem I have windows 2000 in it but i get no power to my cd-rom I am almost certain I have to format the hard drive since its new, I even got a cd with the drive. I have been messing with it more today and now it gets through the loading part of the boot and after it has done the ram mouse and keyboard and the other stuff between those it goes to blank screen. I am completely out of ideas. One guy told me I am in autosecure but I can't even get a boot prompt

the cd-drive is defective, or badly configured. Try to find either a diskette drive somewhere, or another cd-drive.
With a defective cd-drive you'll never be able to install Windows, even if you find a way to boot and format the hard disk.
