Can't find external HD when pluging in the USB

Mar 15, 2004 4:05AM PST

I have an external hard drive (120 Maxtor) that when I plug the USB plug in, the computer beeps, but I can't find anything in "my computer" to open the drive up. (Even when I boot with it plugged in". I know the drive works as I tried it plugged into an IDE cable and it shows up. Any ideas?
THANKS!

A few checks.

1. XP SP1 installed?
2. Motherboard drivers uptodate?
3. USB 2.0?
4. Did it ever work?

Since it worked before, try opening a COMMAND window and try...

FDISK /STATUS

Share the results.

Remember that some don't understand that hard disks are temporary storage and we get to start over...

is in Disk Management on the Computer Management tab. See if it shows up there.
