Can't find a fix for this IE problem!

Jan 18, 2006 4:19AM PST

Sorry for the long post, thought I'd explain as best as I can.

About a week ago Internet Explorer stopped accessing some sites. When I try to go to some sites, It just comes up a white screen and says Done at the bottom left hand corner. As if the page has loaded.
I don't get any error messages at all.
I can access these sites in Firefox and heck I can even access these sites in Internet Explorer while in Safe Mode.

I've been browsing forums since then trying to find the answer but nothing has worked yet.

Here's what I've tried:

Emptied Temp,Temporary Internet Folder,Cookies,History & Preftech Folders.

Spybot Search and Destroy.
Ad-Aware.
Avast AntiVirus.
Trend Micro House call.
Trend Micro Spyware Scan.
SpywareBlaster.
CWShredder.

Set IE to default settings.
Fixed Winsock.
Re-Installed IE via IEFix.
Repaired IE via Start/Run/sfc /scannow
Checked Restricted Sites in IE.
Added sites to Trusted Sites in IE.
Done all the fixes on Microsoft website.

Various Security settings(java/activex etc) in IE suggested by other people.
(I always reset them back again as soon as I noticed they didn't work)

Checked the Hosts file in Windows.

Using Start/Run/ (ran these commands)

REGSVR32 urlmon.dll

REGSVR32 Shdocvw.dll

REGSVR32 Msjava.dll

REGSVR32 Actxprxy.dll

REGSVR32 Cryptdlg.dll

REGSVR32 Oleaut32.dll

REGSVR32 Mshtml.dll

REGSVR32 Browseui.dll

REGSVR32 Shell32.dll

All commands succeeded but still had no effect.

I recently added a Guestbook to my own site (from Bravenet) and I can't access it in IE.
I can access it in Firefox and again I can access it with IE in Safe Mode, lol weird.

Just for the record I'm using Win XP Pro Version 2002 Service Pack 1 Fully Updated.

IE Version 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.050301-1526
Cipher Strength: 128 bit
Update Versions: SP1

The Basics of my PC are:-Gigabyte GA-8IPE 1000 Pro2 Mobo, Pentium4 2.66, 512mb Kingsmax PC2700 DDR Ram, PNY GeForce FX5700 Ultra, Sounblaster Live 24-Bit, Pioneer 107d DVD-RW, Linksys WRT54G Router, Broadband 4mb Connection.(uk Telewest,Blueyonder.)

Can anyone suggest anything else I can try to resolve this problem.
I know I can just use Firefox but that would be just sweeping the problem under the carpet.
I'd rather know why this was happening in the first place.

Any Help Much Appreciated, Ronnie Mckell.

Add EWIDO to the brew and tell what BHO IE has.

BHOs or browser helper objects may be the item, but EWIDO (google.com) may nail it.

Thanks for the reply Bob.

I downloaded the Trial version of EWIDO and ran a full system scan.

It found these: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions\{c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} -> Spyware.Alexa

C:\Documents and Settings\rnd\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\5d03se4j.default\cookies.txt -> Spyware.Cookie.2o7

C:\Documents and Settings\rnd\Local Settings\Application Data\Wildtangent\Cdacache\00\00\0F.dat/files\wtvh.dll -> Spyware.WildTangent

C:\Program Files\Kazaa Lite\supertrick.txt -> Trojan.Qhost.ex

Unfortunatly it did not resolve my problem.

I thought I'd nailed it when I seen it had found things the other programs never seen.

Thanks anyway Bob.

Maybe Kazaa is still there. More tools (that I use.)
Jan 18, 2006 7:30AM PST

Lookup and have BOTH ready.

1. WINSOCKXPFIX
2. KAZAABEGONE

It's likely you'll need to do #1 after #2.

After that, lookup http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/bho/ and then maybe BHODEMON to give me a list of what BHO's are on the machine.

Ok Bob I downloaded WINSOCKXPFIX & KAZAABEGONE.

I then ran Kazaabegone first then ran Winsockxpfix.

Rebooted.

I then clicked on your link in IE and guess what, It was just a white screen lol.

Copied and pasted into Firefox the downloaded BHODEMON.
I ran that and it reported to me I have no BHO's installed.

Does Kazaabegone totally remove kazaa? It is still in my Add/Remove programs list.
I've had that installed since May 2004 lol.
It was a clean version if I remember correctly.
It's never given me any grief before.I only use it sometimes.
Should I uninstall it?

Ronnie.

Sorry to see that it didn't roll over and die.
Jan 18, 2006 9:48AM PST

There are far too items that pests can alter and we don't have a unified tool to find what's changed and push it back to norm. For example all those NO words we can drop in the registry are not illegal but can cause grief.

The OS or IE has suffered damage and the KAZAA connection is very well known. If the tools are run again and it doesn't play nice, then the OS is toasted in some unknown way and the only fix is to wipe and reinstall.

Sorry to see some P2P app involved, but the one you noted is well known about its risks.

If you feel different that's fine, but you can ask if the OS could get toasted in our Virus and Security forum.

Be safe,

Bob

Thanks for giving up some of your time to help me Bob.

I will try all the tools again and like you say if it doesn't play nice I may just have reinstall Windows and updates.

Do you think a Windows repair would maybe work instead of a total reinstall? Just a thought.

I've not lost an OS for a couple of years now lol.
I can't remember but would I have to reinstall all my Apps and Games again?

Yeah I new the risks with Kazaa and P2P programs and chose to ignore them so I've only myself to blame lol, that'll teach me.

I'm still going to hunt down an answer first before I decide any drastic measures like reinstall lol.

Thanks again Bob.

Ronnie.
