Can't enter WD My Book Essential External Drive

Jul 1, 2006 10:20AM PDT

Hi,

I recently bought a 160 GB My Book. It worked very good for about a week.

Yesterday, i noticed that the shortcut that i have on my desktop does not have the WD icon, appearing only as a sistem icon (the icon that appears by default on windows xp).

Later in the evening, when i tried to enter into my drive, windows was not recognizing it. No icon on My PC, Device Manager, no usb recognition...

When i looked at the drive, the indicator light (the one that blinks when the drive spins) was always on. The drive appears to be stuck.

I have tried unplugging it, searching it in the device manager, triying to turn it off... but nothing happens.

Only once, windows xp did recognize it as a "usb mass storage device". It blinked several times for about a minute, but i couldn't enter to see my data.

I need support in this matter to solve my drive problem.

Please... need your help...

Charles.

Since it's new, they'll probably exchange it.

Remember that these devices are not BACKUP...

The indicator light is on when i plug the usb cable...

When i only plug the power cord, it remains off...

But it can't be turned off via power button.

I don't know how tu unblock it... can you?

My solution is to test on other machines, then if it doesn't work and we need to reclaim files we pull the hard disk out and try another case. If that doesn't work we put the drive into the slave connection of the desktop and try. Nothing still? We see if PC FILE INSPECTOR can find any files and we'll run a DRIVE FITNESS TEST on the hard disk.

All this may violate the warranty so be sure of your goals.
