Clarification Request
Have you posted here before?
Apr 21, 2012 4:41AM PDT

Only your post suggests some continuation of a previous discussion, but I can't find anything other than your post above.

What does, "no luck" mean? Why did you need to reinstall XP?

How did you reinstall XP? Many users forget drivers, especially the SATA drivers for SATA hard drives which need to be installed during the re-installation process, as well as chipset/motherboard drivers and others.

What system is this, make, model and specifications?

Your subject says, "Can't download anything", but in your post you say, "downloads but will not run", so which is it? Can you download or can't you?

"How about 190 min. to download"... what?

What is "Any browser"?

Sorry if I seem harsh, but with so few details given all I could suggest is to take the computer to your local repair shop and ask them to reinstall XP properly for you.

If you are convinced
Apr 24, 2012 8:42PM PDT

that you have a rootkit, then you need to take specialised action to remove it. But how do you know? What scans have you carried out? Rootkits do not generally survive a full reinstall.

Rootkits do not infect hardware like the motherboard or video card, or any other hardware for that matter.

We still don't know what make and model computer this is, but if it is a manufacturer OEM machine they the manufacturer's web site normally has guidance on how to reinstall the OS. Microsoft can only give general advice as all makes and models are different.

If we knew what make and model then may be we could help you find that guidance and those steps.

If we also knew what that Blue Screen said, that might give a clue,

When replacing video cards there is a specific way to do it.

1] With Windows loaded and running, head over to the Device Manager and UNINSTALL the existing video card drivers. Extremely important to uninstall those drivers first.

The screen will go black then revert to basic VGA video mode.

2] Shut down Windows normally. Turn off the computer (if it has an on/off switch at the back), and disconnect the power lead.

3] Open the case and remove the existing video card. Install the new card.

4] Reconnect power, turn on the computer and power up to load Windows again.

5] Windows will be running in VGA mode. Install the drivers from the CD that came with the new card.

The web page below shows these same steps, but this is likely for a different make model computer and video cards than you have.

Let's check what you say.
Apr 24, 2012 8:57PM PDT

You say "Any download stops at 10% or 25%".

Try to download this file (just click on the link): http://www.xs4all.nl/~ferguson/freeware/fmore13.zip
It's a small download (only 6,53 kB). What happens? Does it stop at 0,65 kB or 1,63 kB? Or does it complete?

Re: troubles
Apr 26, 2012 4:14AM PDT

This rather sad story makes me think that the "Broadband" forum isn't the right place to visit.

Assuming it isn't a hardware issue a clean install of Windows (after erasing the disk with DBAN) and the original drivers and utilities from the driver and utilities disk(s) should result in a fully working system. If it doesn't, it's a hardware issue, so you have to choose between repair it or replace it.

There's nothing in your story that points to a rootkit, I think.

If a PC doesn't boot from a CD ...
Apr 27, 2012 11:38PM PDT

the usual causes are:
- bad hardware (usually the drive, sometimes the motherboard)
- disk not bootable
- BIOS not set to boot from it

If we exclude the last 2 causes in your case, we're left with the first. Now find the failed component and replace it.

Booting from CD can be done without any hard disk being connected, because it isn't being used in the operation. Remember that a PC in 1980 didn't even have a hard disk and still could boot from a diskette. That's still the same.
A rootkit by definition resides on the hard disk, so can't influence this.

rootkit on windows?
Apr 26, 2012 11:33AM PDT

rootkits are generally a UNIX problem. Maybe you mean a system hook that modified the kernel? In which case, a reinstall would have overwritten it. The only infection a format and reinstall will not stop would be a EEPROM infection and I have never seen one of those in anything other than a theoretical discussion.

When you say downloading always fails are you talking about from a LAN [ie two computers in our house] or a internet only connection, because it could be the internet connection, software like sandvine at your isp causes such things on purpose for certain protocols normally found to be used for piracy.

Maybe you should restart your post and describe what is going on.

Who is your ISP? What is your local network config [wireless router, wired router, switch, etc...]

Answer
I had that board! BAD CAPS killed it.
Apr 26, 2012 8:53AM PDT
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_478/P4C800E_Deluxe/

Wow that brings back the bad memories. This board was OK till the BAD CAPS issue took it down.

Reading your post also makes me think that the everyday user might think it's a corrupt BIOS or rootkit. At least it flat BLEW UP for us. Funny story.

The first power supply failed so we added 100 Watts and put it back into use. Later it died again but we had not heard about the BAD CAPS story so we added another 100 Watts and back it went to work. AGAIN IT DIED. This time we put in the biggest PSU we had and later that week BANG! We opened the case to find the BAD CAPS had exploded.

At least it didn't catch fire.
