Can't download

Jul 31, 2011 5:45PM PDT

I am using a Samsung Notebook running windows XP with Service Pack 3 32 bit version. I'm not a techie by any means. I need some help! When I try to download something it just goes through the motions. The screen comes up that says how long it will take to download, and even say the download is complete. After that nothing happens. It won't let me run it, and it doesn't save it either. Help me! Thanks in advance.

What downloads, and what are you using to download?

If you mean downloads using an internet browser, (eg Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome or similar), then find the location on your hard drive where the files are downloaded too, then either open those files or run them.

I hope this is what you're asking about.

I am using firefox. I'm trying to download Malware Bytes and spyware doctor. I'm looking for something to protect my computer. I went to my hard drive and looked in the 'downloads' file, but nothing is there. I don't think it is actually saving it when it says the download is finished. It never gives me the option of where to save it to, or to run in. I'm not sure what else I should be telling you. I'm sorry I'm not much help. Like I said before, I'm not a techie. I'm a dummy when it comes to this stuff. Thanks for your help.

Firefox

Goto Firefox Tools > Options, then General tab. Where does it 'Save files to"?

You say you are looking for something to protect your computer. Do you have a firewall, (turned on), and an anti-virus scanner? Those two titles you mentioned are neither.

Problem
Aug 1, 2011 4:30PM PDT

Mark,

It says it is saving my files to my 'downloads' folder. There's nothing there. I was told by someone who I thought to know more about computers than me, that those two programs were basically all that I needed. There's an AVG program downloaded on here, but it's not working. I guess what I'm saying is that I don't have an anti virus scanning program. I was trying to tackle that problem, but was obviously misinformed. I've tried reading some things to figure this out, but I'm lost. Any additional help that you could give me would me much appreciated. Thank you for the help that you've already given me as well.

Try again

Sorry for the delay.

Try again, but change that Download location to your Desktop. Then the file will download to your Desktop.

Make sure you "Download and Save", and not "Download and Run". It is safer.

Once the download has finished, if it does not show on the Desktop, press F5 on your keyboard. This refreshes the Desktop.
