Can't defrag hard drive

Dec 26, 2003 8:25AM PST

Even though I am using the same procedure to defrag my system that I have always used I am unable now to defrag my drive. The procedure I normally use is to close all open applications except systray and explorer as well as disable my screen saver. This has always worked in the past until today. The defrag srats without a hitch but freezes up after reaching 13%. I attempted to start my system in safe mode to try that route but, wouldn't you know it, I can't get the system to boot up into safe mode. Any suggestions on how to do that, btw? I've also tried doing the defrag with all start up applications open except the screen saver--that doesn't work. I'm using Windows ME. Thanks for any help.

1. http://support.microsoft.com?id=222469 is applicable to your issue. Note that the QUICKLAUNCH bar also interferes. "It's a program too."

2. As to Safe Mode, the quicklaunch bar issue can thwart your efforts, but try this. After the power on, press and hold the left control key. See if the boot menu appears.

Thanks for the help. I was finally able to boot my system up in safe mode and the defrag went without a hitch once I did that.
