Can't Connect to the internet

Dec 4, 2003 4:16AM PST

OS: Windows XP Pro
Router: Linksys Model BEFSR41
Cable Modem

I was using Internet Explorer and it crashed while using it. I had to reboot and after that it would not connect through the router or the modem. The other computer on the router works just fine. Any suggestions or help would be great.

Jlhd,

Have you tried to use System Restore, which should take you back to a time when things were "hunky dory"? Here's a link on how to do that:

Hope this helps.

I went to do that, but just my luck the oldest restore point is just after this total internet failure. Are there any suggestions on where I should look to see whats wrong?

Because your first sign of a problem was after Internet Explorer crashed, first, try to "Repair" IE by following the instructions at the link below:

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP

After that, if the problem isn't fixed, make sure to run a complete antivirus scan of the computer, with the current onboard scanner and by doing a network scan from the other networked computer. (Make sure the virus defintions are up to date. After that, check for parasites by installing either, or both of the free spyware programs below. Since you don't have internet access on the computer in question, you should be able to download the programs while on the other networked computer, then share the files with the problem machine. Install the programs, run them, and delete all spyware that is found.:

If you don't find anything, maybe the LSP fix at the link below will get things up and running:

Hope this helps.

Jlhd, One More Thing...

Because corruption can happen from a variety of avenues, it would be a good idea to update your ethernet card's drivers. Find the specicifc ethernet card type and driver by accessing the "Device Manager", then clicking on the + sign beside the "Network Adapters" section, then clicking on the specific ethernet device to highlight it, then clicking on the "Properties" button. An updated driver will frequently help jumpstart the internet connection.

Hope this helps, too..
