Can't connect to new printer installed on home network

Jul 9, 2005 11:41PM PDT

Hope someone can help. Both my machines run XP Pro on a home no network. I already have one printer but have bought another. I can't add this printer to the network - I can access it from the machine it is attached to but not from the other machine on the network.

When i try to install the printer on the other machine, I get a connect to dialogue box. I input the username and password from the other machine but get this message:

The credentials supplied are not sufficient to access this printer. Do you want to specify new credentials?

If I click yes, I just get the dialogue box again I've no idea what new credentials to input. Sometimes I get:

The credentials supplied conflict with an existing set of credentials.

No joy there either. I can access files on the other machine but this printer problem is rather annoying.

My method of adding a networked printer....
Jul 10, 2005 12:58AM PDT

which is attached to another machine is by way of the Add Printer wizard. Choosing a network printer to install, I follow the wizard and add the proper drivers when requested.

I've never seen a request for credentials, but then your situation may be different.

the printer has to be "shared".

On the computer the printer is attached to, goto Start > Printers and Faxes, and make sure the printer is shown as an icon, not just a file.

If the icon does not have a hand holding the printer it is not shared. Right click the printer, select Sharing and select the option to "Share this printer".

You will also need to install the printer software on the other computer as well.

This is probably what the wizard would do anyway.

I had to install a new printer port, then tried to print from my laptop -- forgot about printer sharing. This little thread saved a lot of time and frustration -- especially after I learned how to install a motherboard. And everything worked, except the printer port. Yes, the computer system is old, but I like my Dells -- and can't afford a new system at the moment.

A long way to go to "thank you" -- but it's heartfelt.
