Can't connect to Internet with Ethernet connection

I'm using Windows XP, a Cable Modem and NTL Broadband Internet and a Realtek Network Card, when i connect the ethernet cable to the card and the modem the Ethernet light on the modem comes on but the installer still cannot find the connection. any suggestion? (admittedly i have no idea what i'm doing feel free to laugh)

No, but i've just found a wireless router they provide which i have asked for more details on in the wireless networking forum, if that doesn't work i'll use your idea, thanks
