Can't connect to internet or IM services in Vista

Jan 11, 2008 12:22PM PST

Computer Specs:
HP Pavilion a6235x
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 6000+
Motherboard manufacturer's name: ECS MCP61PM-HM
HP/Compaq name: Nettle2-GL8E
3072MB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM
Vista Home Premium

Basically what's happening is, when connect to any IM service (MSN, ICQ,AOL, etc..) it won't connect. Windows Live messenger gives an error of "Your machine appears to have an invalid IP address", ICQ gives "No HTTP Tunnel" Can't connect with IE7 was able to before but can connect with Firefox. Everything was set up, firewalls disabled, windows defender disabled, did very fix for messenger possible found on the net,.. uninstalled Norton Internet security..

Nothing worked... figured it was a problem with Vista so did a system recovery using the recovery discs.

Now, after the restore, was able to get on Windows Live, connect to any IM application and access the internet fine (IE7 and Firefox). did the windows updates, installed office 2007, symantec corporate antivirus, working fine.. disabled windows firewall, defender and such..

now a few days later.. back to where we started with the internet shut down. nothing can access the internet, can't connect to any IM service.. there is an ip. before this happened... a scanner was installed and norton internet security (trial version with the pc) was uninstalled. everything worked fine before.. but just closing the install pop up for norton got to be a pain.

Question : can uninstalling Norton internet Security have an effect on the computer?

internet.. is dial up.. there's a splitter hooked into the modem which is a bit loose and the line from the wall and line for the phone are connected to that. Bad idea probably. When connecting... at times there will be no tone at all. and windows message would say no dial tone, or at times it would be busy even though no one is on the phone.

Everything worked fine in the old computer using windows XP.
Now I'm wondering how to resolve this issue. System restore again..? install XP, (might be a pain since there's no floppy) or something else... help please.

odd...

update : it works again now without doing anything to it.. seems like it's on and off.. could it be the modem, the line or just the connection to the ISP itself?

This can be a complicated problem

it could be many things. Maintenance first then troubleshooting is what I'd suggest. Fixing this would take a long time, hours. I'll keep this link tracked in case it returns.

If you think it's the modem reset it, leave it off for 30 seconds then turn it on again. This fix is a quick one.

another thing found

it works after when rebooting. if you disconnect from the internet, then reconnect afterwards..then nothing would work. however, after rebooting the system, it works fine. seems like upon disconnecting the IP doesn't refresh or something when reconnecting, who knows.

Keep in mind this is a dial up connection.. so there's no way to turn off the modem unless by disabling it

Up date driver for modem
Jan 12, 2008 2:33PM PST

See device manager for detail. Right click on modem in device manger, choose update drive, choose on line search. If this doesn't work search for the manufactures web page on line and get the driver there. If still having a problem, list modem specifications here and I'll see if I can help you find it.

tried

I tried the modem driver update. It still does the same thing, I went tot he manufacturer's site for it.. so no clue at all what to do. I don't exactly remember the modem name though... but you do have the computer specs (computer model number and motherboard model number) in the first post if you need to look it up.

This is all that this available, I'll need more information

56K bps data/fax modem, this is just general information.

Take this path: start > control panel > devices manager > click (+) next to modem or Ethernet adapter. Write down what you find and post it here. This needs to be exact, close will not do.
