Can't connect through router

Aug 30, 2004 6:25PM PDT

Modem: Moto Surfboard SB4200
Router: Moto WR850G
OS: XP on an HP Pavillion

The router was bought a week or 2 ago and the connection has been working fine since but suddenly stopped working today (setup at my girlfriend's house). I was fiddling with it for over an hour tonight but for the life of me could not figure out the problem. The internet works when the computer is connected directly to the modem, but not when its connected through the router. When I connect it to the router I can ping the router and get to the its configuration page from the computer but I can't connect to the internet. The router's firmware is updated. My gf said her father ran HP's recovery wizard recently. Would that have anything to do with it? My guess is that there's a wrong setting in the router but I have no clue as to what it could be. Anyone have any ideas?

Also, what's up with the USB connection on the Surfboard modem? I've never used that modem so I don't know much about it. Can you actually connect to the internet through USB instead of a CAT 5 cable and NIC? If not then I really see no purpose of the USB connection. I tried using the SB as the network connector but it wouldn't connect. They have a CAT 5 cable going from the modem to the onboard NIC and I have to choose that connection to get it to connect (when the router isn't hooked up).

My real inquiry is in the first paragraph. I'm totally baffled and have run out of ideas so any help on that would be great. The SB question is just to satisfy my curiosity. Thanks

Some routers allow you to change the function from a Gateway to a Router. For DHCP purposes the Gateway function is used, as a switch the Router function. I might reset the router back to its defaults, usually a button needs pushing, and see what that gets you.

Well, after many frustrating nights, I finally figured it out. All I had to do was put the NIC MAC address into the router as a cloned MAC address. Thanks for the help Michael.
