For a start, please provide more information about the scanner:

? Make and model.
? Parallel, serial, USB or what ever.
? Did your friend also give you the installation disk
and manual or quick start sheet ?
? What scanner program(s) came with the scanner ?
? What have you done to try to install the scanner ?

Without the above information, it is unlikely you will get useful help, since there are different types of scanners and they require slightly different installation methods.

you did,nt supply alot of info on this one but from personal experience i can tell you that some scanners will only work with windows 98 however some companies have supplied a download usually on there website where you can update however if you are using the primax series forget it the 9600 series is only for 98

I have not been able to install a scanner using XP without the installation disk or new drivers from the web site. I had a scanner that was never going to be compatible with XP and I sold it. Check the web site and see if that model will work and download the right drivers as needed.
