can't connect my dell laptop to my samsung plasma tv

i've just had a phillips hdmi cable,
past 3 days i was trying to connect my dell N5110 laptop to my 43" samsung plasma tv ( PS43D450) and all i have is no signal Confused
already updated intel HD Graphics and nvidia driver and still nothing.
plz help and thanks in advance.

I thought that HDMI was my default video output port

It seems to be that my default output port is vga.
i've tried to change it to hdmi but i didn't find the right option to do it, maybe you would help with that.

Once the HDMI cable is plugged into the set and the TV is on, and set to that input, did you try cloning the display or extending the windows display?

All that is Windows 101 type stuff. Right after you learn file associations and more. Here's a link about it.
