Can't click on email links in Outlook Express

Jun 24, 2010 9:09AM PDT

Hello,

For the last few days, I've been having problems clicking on links in my Outlook Express emails. Instead of a pointer, I have a hand with a index finger. If I click on the link, it locks up OE and I have to bring up the task manager to get out of it. I am using OE 6 and IE 7. I have changed nothing and have been using those for months. This is a new problem out of the blue, it seems. I'm not super computer savvy so please give any help in layman's terms. Thank you kindly.

Lisa

Add-ons?

IE problems may be caused by Add-ons and although OE does not have the same range of add-on options, it can also be affected.

One possibility is an anti-virus add-on for OE. Do you use an anti-virus, and if so, does it check incoming and outgoing emails? It may be that it has a 'LinkScanner' component similar to the one used by AVG which on occasions causes problems.

Hi Mark,

Thanks so much for trying to help me. We have Norton on our computer and it is set to check emails. Do you know where I should look for the linkscanner component that you mentioned? Thanks again.

That's typically for AVG, so it won't work like that in Norton.

I'd start with disabling everything you can find in the Norton Command Center (or whatever it's called). Make a note of the current settings so you can go back. Does that make a difference?

Did you try right-click and see if there's an option to open them?

If no help until know, totally remove Norton. For another round of diagnostics. See http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Norton-Removal-Tool.shtml
You can always reinstall it, of course.
