Can't change homepage in new account

by Mary T-205113508737904897 / January 30, 2006 7:51 AM PST

I use an Acer Computer and use Google as my homepage. I set up a new account for another member of the family and set Google as the home page. however it reverts straight back to the Acer advertising page. Surely a reputable company such as Acer would not use underhand methods!!!! Any suggestions on how to stop Acer taking over as the home page would be welcome.
I use Windows XP Home and have swept for nasties but it seems O.K.

Mary, Just A Thought..

First, clear all files from the "Temporary Internet Files" folder and the "Cookies" folder for that user log in. If the browser being used is Internet Explorer, then open the Control Panel, double click on the "Display" icon, then click on the "General" tab. In the "Home Page" section at the top of the page, copy/paste the link below into the home page line:

http://www.google.com/

Once it's pasted in to the Home Page line MAKE SURE to click on "APPLY", then OK.

Hope this helps.

'have swept for nasties'...

and that is potentially the problem. If any of your anti-spyware apps are set to prevent the home page from being hijacked that can keep you from changing it until that option is turned off in whatever utility might be doing it.

Check your "spyware scanners" settings.

Re-homepage

Thanks Grif & Edward. Tried what you suggested Grif, but homepage still reverts back to Acer. As Edward suggests the problem could be in my anti spyware settings, but I have not worked it out yet. I am using Webroot SpySweeper, Ewido, Norton Firewall and Norton Antivirus.

Disabled antispyware programs, set up new account, turned antispyware back on. Problem solved. Wish I had thought of that earlier! Thanks for the help Grif & Edward.
