Can't boot pc

by angel-54 / October 9, 2005 8:03 AM PDT

Running 98 SE and I believe I have a virus. PC has not been turned on in 3 months and turned it on, booted up and at least 30 windows popped up and froze. Shut down and pc says VKD error and goes into surface scan. So far it is showing 180 Bad clusters.

Is there a way I can run Norton CD without having windows up or through a network?

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the keyboard that you have attached to your computer is not working correctly. When your keyboard does not work correctly, the keyboard cannot be initialized.

connected new keyboard

I connect a new keyboard and the error is gone.

Now windows hangs at the opening screen for about 10 minutes and goes right into surface scan. Does this sound like a virus. The pc has not been turned on in 3 month.

When was last time you ran defrag?
by Marianna Schmudlach / October 11, 2005 10:00 AM PDT

Maybe it would be a good idea to defrag your computer.

To run Disk Defragmenter in Windows 95, 98, Me, NT, 2000, and XP, follow these steps:

Click the Start button and select Programs, then Accessories.

Click System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter.

As you are done, run your Anti Virus for a full scan - is your anti virus updated??

ON-line scans:
Also do an online scan at one or all of these.
On the first one, make sure you checkmark the box that says "autoclean"
