Can't Access Certain websites from one computer

May 20, 2011 11:58AM PDT

Hello, all.

I have two computers (both XP), one cable modem (i unplug one from the modem when using the other). One computer now no longer finds two websites either via FTP or via the web browser.I cannot ping them either. Both websites are served from the same company. The other computer does find them without any problems.

Trying to fix this,I checked the "Hosts" folder in the System 32 folder. It had an entry for "browser-security.microsoft.com", which I deleted. I ran Malwarebytes and Norton, neither of which showed malware or viruses.

Any suggestions?

Grif advised on this before.

To get a second opinion scan with HITMAN PRO.

My thought is that switching the cable like that is rarely correct. I had to power down the modem, switch then power up the cable modem.

Another fine reason for a router.

Thanks, Grif. Ran Hitman Pro & "no threats found"

Most of the time Router was creating problem and it thus take very long time establishing connection. That is why it is much better checking the cables and router and than work on it.

Check the network connection in the second system and in command prompt check whether it is taking the packets for particular website or not.

also try switching between the router i.e modems ...

Am i right that you mean send a ping from the second computer? If so, yes, I did that and the packets transferred right away, then I tried the same thing with the first computer and the message was "request timed out".

And R. Profitt, I was not clear--I always power down the cable modem before switching between computers and then power the modem up again

You didn't tell what was installed and not a word about the PC.
