Can/Should I run PcCillin AND Yahoo dsl antivirus???

Jan 5, 2006 1:15AM PST

I don't know much about computers or antivirus software. We installed PCcillin last year and it's been great. No virus problems. Very few popups. A couple months ago we went from dial-up to SBC yahoo DSL. It comes with some kind of firewall/antivirus/antipopup software. We haven't installed it. Our subscription to PcCillin expired this week (although it still seems to be updating???). I'd rather not update the PcCillin b/c SBC is free. Should I get the PcCillin off my computer and install the SBC software? Can I use both at once? How does the SBC software compare to PcCillin?

I'm very confused and would appreciate any help.

Thanks.

My two cents

I don't know anything about either of those antivirus programs, that said, you should only have one active program running. Also, I never pay for anything if I don't have to. Minor assumption on my part would be to "think" that if SBC is offering this its probably good enough. And as a futher note, I have always noticed that once a paid subscription is "over" you "no" longer have an active program. I have put new antivirus programs on people's machine that thought they still had coverage, only to find that the new AV programs would find stuff. Just an FYI. I use AVG antivirus, for free, people on this forum seem to like it, but there are lots of others like Avast. I also have Zone Alarm firewall, for free. They can be found and downloaded from download.com. By the way, just because you got SBC, doesn't mean that you have to use their AV / firewall programs.
Good Luck

Antivirus

Hi Corinascot,

The Yahoo A/V offered for FREE is McAfee A/V with some of McAfee's other features(It's the EXACT paid for version for FREE through your ISP). You currently pay for PcCillin with you subscription running out. I think Donna summed up the A/V situation very nicely in this thread.

You should NEVER run 2 A/V programs at the same time, choose one & stick with it. If McAfee is free from Yahoo DSL VS pcCillin cost some amount of money, you might try the FREE McAfee, if it doesn't suit you, you can always return to PcCillin or a FREE A/V like AVG, AVAST just to name a couple.

Hope that helps,
Steve
