can only share files in one direction

by gatkins / January 21, 2006 12:57 AM PST

I have three computers networked via a Speedtouch 570 ADSL wireless router. 2 PC's are wireless and 1 is wired. All have file and printer sharing enabled, are on dynamic IP's assigned by the router, all can see and ping each other but although I can access 2 PC's from the third, I cannot access the third from either of the others. The other two can access each other.

When I try to access m/c 3 from 1 or 2 I get a log in dialogue box but when I try to log in using a correct user name and password (all three PC's have the same users registered and the same passwords) the log in fails.

This is not a firewall issue. All three machines run ZoneAlarm with Windows Firewall off. I have even briefly turned Zone alarm off but without any positive benefit.

I have checked every obvious cause and can find nothing. Can anyone think of an obscure reason for this. I would be really grateful for help as I am very close to rebuilding my hard drive and really can't afford the time!!

Machines are 1 x P4 running WXP pro, 1 x P3 running W2k, 1 x Centrino laptop running WXP home the WXP pro m/c is the villain.

This is a new problem in 3 machimes which have happily exchanged data for some time previously.

Make sure the Caps Lock key is not engaged during logon. Also, have you considered the possibility of a profile problem?

Thanks for your reply. It's definitely not the caps lock and I created an identical new user on both machines to see if the profiles were out of synch in some way but no improvement. Thing is i can access m/c 2 from m/c 1, but cannot access m/c 1 from m/c 2. Conversly I can ping 1 from 2 and telnet onto 1 from 2. It's only file and print sharing that doesn't work, and indeed I can't VNC onto 1 from 2 either. I'm wondering if there's a problem with specific ports but can't think of anything that might be blocking ports except the firewall and disabling that doesn't fix it.
