can not scan disk

my computer acts as though there is a program opened in the back ground when there are no programs running. When I go to scan disk I get error message "restarting due to disk write". What can I do to correct my problem,this slows up my intire system. I have windows me.

This usually happens because you didn't disable your antivirus program prior to scanning. AFAIK, it's only an issue with the DOS line of Windows (Win9x/Me), so if you ever upgrade it probably won't be necessary.

Some folks find the best work around for this issue is to run products like scandisk and defrag in safe mode.

Perhaps YEW is correct about the AV thing, I can't tell as I just fire off the product and it runs, AV or not.
