Can not download flash player on IE6

Jul 6, 2007 1:31AM PDT

For some reason I suddenely started getting the message 'Download Flash Player', when I go to web sites that require flash. It was working fine until recently. No changes or new programs on the system. If I try to download, it looks like downloading, then I get the message, 'Do you see the information bar', but nothing is there.

Windows XP Home SP1 (Was never able to update to SP 2 - Access Denied error)
McAfee Virus scan - No firewall
IE 6
Cable Modem - Road Runner

Interestingly enough, on Firefox 2, Flash player works fine.

Any suggestions ?

Cyril

Do I understand that you do not use a firewall. You should really be using a firewall. Even the Windows firewall will do.

"Was never able to update to SP 2 - Access Denied error"

You should also be using SP2. Do you have a genuine copy of Windows XP?

Charlie,

I do use Windows Firewall, I meant no other firewall like Norton, McAfee etc.

I do have a genuine Windows XP Home, it is a Dell Dimension 4600 computer, bought from Dell.

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks,
Cyril

Flash Players have different versions
Jul 6, 2007 2:45AM PDT

You need to go to http://www.adobe.com and download the Flash Player using Internet Explorer.

The Question is why you were never allowed to update to XP SP2.

Go here to check. Start Diagnostics.

http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/

for each like that has an error click on the fix buttons until you see the validate windows

Validate windows and then go to

http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

get your windows updates.

Also to update your system, here is a neat little tool.

http://www.filehippo.com/updatechecker/

It will help you update the items that are on your computer.

Updates

Rick,

Thanks for your reply.
I ran through Microsoft Genuine link and the XP Home was validated without any errors.
Went back to download Adobe Flash, but it kept saying '

You should get a little bar
Jul 8, 2007 3:16AM PDT

at the top of Internet Explorer for ActiveX.

Each browser uses a different version of Flash Player. To get the Flash Player to work in each, you have to open each browser and go to http://www.adobe.com and download the Flash Player there.

First, are you logged in using an unrestricted account?

Second go to

internet options

click on security

click on defaults

scroll down and look for ActiveX.

My settings are Medium

under ActiveX are,

Allow previously unused = Enable
Allow Scriptlets = disable
Automatic prompting = disable
Binary and script = enable
display video and animation = disable
download signed ActiveX = prompt
download unsigned = disable
initialize and script = disable
run ActiveX and controls = enable
script ActiveX controls = enable

After you have these settings go to Adobe and try it. If this works, also try going to Windows update and try for your updates. If you see at the top, get Microsoft today(I think that's waht they call it) get that. Then you get a new installer and then you'll be able to get the other updates.

Good louck,

No Change
Jul 9, 2007 8:53AM PDT

Rick,

I tried all the settings for ActiveX. No luck ! Flashplayer download tells me to look for the 'gold bar', but there is nothing.

Actually, this problem might have started when I was using MS Updates and allowed it to update to IE7. After a few minutes, I got a message saying unable to update, need SP2. Then I tried to update SP2 and it did not work, but my guess is that someting changed in IE6. If I can uninstall IE6 and install a new IE6 things may be OK. I am not planning to update SP2, as it may crash the system. Have quite a few paid programs (downloads) are installed, and it may be a real headache to re-install them. Do not know much about backing up the complete system and how to restore if SP2 install does not succeed.

Thanks for your help. I might just use Firefox when Flashplayer is needed.

Cyril

Try Downloading Flash Manually
Jul 9, 2007 9:39AM PDT

Download the full Flash ActiveX installer from the link below, then run it to install Flash:

(Although the link below says: Version 9.0.28, I believe it actually installs the most recent 9.0.45)
http://www.softwarepatch.com/internet/flash.html

Hope this helps.

manual download
Jul 12, 2007 10:19PM PDT

Hi Grif,

Thanks for your reply. I uninstalled the flashplayer on IE and tried the manual download. Here is the message I received. Not sure how to fix this.

'The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly Installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.'

I am not running in safe mode.

Any suggestions ?

Try going here

http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/

download and run the uninstaller.

Restart your computer.

Now try the install.

If you noticed, the installers were there also. I just want to make a note, there is a new version of Flash Player that came out today.

You can try IEFIX
Jul 9, 2007 10:07AM PDT
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm

might repair it for you. I went to control panel

add/remove programs

show updates

removed Internet Explorer 7. You'll get a prompt saying that these programs were installed and may not work correctly.

Click ok

follow the instructions.

When you restart, you'll have IE 6 back.

You can also try

the Flash Player uninstall. Use it with Internet Explorer.

http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157

Restart your computer

use a registry cleaner to remove anything left.

restart your computer

now try to download the flash player.
