Question

Can not connect to the Internet

by Ribakit01 / October 21, 2014 10:53 PM PDT

I have a modem and a router with WIFI. Typically we run three computers, one or two laptops and an I-pad. All connect and work fine. One computer does not. It connects to MS Outlook and Skype, but it can not connect to the Internet. This computer has windows XP. I try connecting with Explorer or Mozilla, but neither work, both give me a message that they ran out of time. It shows an IP address and I've renewed it several times but still no internet connection. Please help.

Answer
Any expired antivirus has been known to do that.

Apps seem to work but web browsers don't. It's a known symptom of expired antivirus or hijacked web browsers.

How do I fix the problem?

You'll have to know what caused it.

I offered 2 common causes but if that's not it then you can reload the OS and if the hardware is good it will work again.

As Mr. Proffitt said, could be a hijack. Take a look in Internet Options and see what shows as you homepage, if it is gibberish, clear it and type in MSN.COM, click apply and try again. IF it shows as normal, assuming you had MSN as default..it is back to the drawing board. Some types of malware can create strange problems. Also, have you tried booting to safe mode to see if the problem still exists? IF all is normal in Safe Mode...likely a malware/virus issue.

Well you say Outlook works.

Do you mean it recieves new emails? If you do receive new emails they are coming from the internet. Skype is also using the internet. So that means there is an issue with your browsers. I would download Chrome and see if it works. But like others have said you may be hijacked. I would also run Anti-MalwareBytes to remove malware. Also look in your programs in the control and order by date. Look and see if stuff was installed that you didn't know about and uninstall them.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
