Can no longer Download from Cnet

Feb 4, 2011 9:43PM PST

This is really strange. All of a sudden I can no longer download anything from Cnet. I click the link and the page refreshes, but never no prompt for the download comes up anymore? I have tried in both Firefox and Internet Explorer with the same results....no download pop-up dialog to save or run appears? The problem is in both Firefox and IE....however when I try Google Chrome I get the prompt to save or run the file. I have racked my brain trying to figure out why all of a sudden I can no longer Download from Cnet in Firefox and Internet Explorer? I have made sure that download.com was in my allowed sites lists....any other ideas why all of a sudden I can't download?....Have even went as far as disabling ESET internet Security to see if that might be the problem but not so.

Any software that will kill a rogue process may be reported as a threat. Be sure to ask in the Spyware forum why this is so.

Both Rkill and AVG are ...
Feb 15, 2011 6:12AM PST

performing as expected.

You might want to read this tutorial for RKILL -
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic308364.html

If AVG is preventing RKILL from unning you might have to configure AVG to ignore RKILL or you might have to disable AVG until RKILL has a chance to kill the suspected malware processes.

Thanks

Ok I read it, so I disabled AVG Ran it and it killed the processes successfully. I am doing a full system scan with the latest superantispyware then will run malwarebytes full scan. I appriciate your responses. I will let you know if this works. I really don't want to make another profile just for 1 glitch. I would like to know if this doesn't work, if their prossibly could be a registry item that could be prevententing the download from Cnet?

Did not work
Feb 16, 2011 5:20AM PST

I did option 3 rkill was succesfull, ran the malwarebytes and superantispyware full system scans found a couple of tracking cookies nothing major. I still have the problem downloading. I created another profile and again I am unable to download. The screen refreshes it looks like it wants to redirect to the download page were it should say your download will start momentarly ect, but it just refreshes the page again.

Anyone have any ideas?

Just a thought.

I note you said you are using AVG. When you installed this version of AVG, did it install some sort of Browser tool? A toolbar, or an add-on, or similar?

A couple of years ago AVG included a browser option called LinkScanner which proved to be troublesome. They replaced it, (or maybe repackaged it with a new name etc), and I just wonder, if this browser utility is installed, whether it is preventing your browser from completing the download.

I know you said you disabled AVG, but it is likely this toolbar/add-on was not disabled.

Toolbar for avg

I checked, and the Toolbar AVG Safesearch addon is disabled. I actually disabled everything as far as tool bars / addons go. Just to see if there was a conflict.

(NT) OK, it was just a wild guess.

Which version of IE?

Lately we have seen users trying out IE9. It's a Beta version, for testing purposes only, and may still be buggy.

If your Chrome and Firefox browsers behave as expected then IE certainly seems the culprit. Another consideration is malware. It can affect IE and Windows because IE is tightly integrated into the OS through Windows Explorer. So may be time for a deep scan with your anti-virus, and 2nd opinions with anti-malware scanners like the free versions of Malwarebytes Anti-malware and SUPERAntiSpyware.

IE9 worked
Feb 17, 2011 1:49AM PST

I ran every type of scan under the sun, deep scans, full scans, no luck then ran ccleaner thinking maybe registry still no luck. I made sure there were no addons running still no luck. So I punt! I installed IE9 and all is working. It is so strange how IE8 just stopped working only for cnets site I was able to download in the past, and nothing out of the norm happen that I could see to make it stop working. There is nothing in the event logs to explain any of this. So I'm curious to uninstall IE9 to see if everything works after that, but i'm not going to.. I want to play with ie9 for a bit, because I think I like it (so far) better then 8. Its kinda like chrome but thats another topic.

Thanks for everyones feed back and ideas on this problem.

Well that's interesting!

I would have suggested uninstalling IE9 if you had installed it, but here you are saying you installed it to see if it would work, and it did! Happy

Good work.

And yes, it would be a good test to see if reverting back to IE8 corrects the issue, but of course that is your decision.

Good luck with IE9, and nice work on solving the issue.
