can Netscape import dbx?

Mar 17, 2005 9:52AM PST

How can I import dbx files into Netscape Mail? The Import utility in Netscape imports only MBX files but Outlook Express uses dbx
I searched this CNET forum for any postings on this problem but didn?t find any.
Can someone please help?
The only 2 workarounds that I know are not suitable:
1. I tried to export dbx to Outlook *pst before finally import from there into Netscape. But doing it that way loses the graphics and original formatting. It works only for plain text.
2. Using the good old manual process to upload one mail at-a-time before download back to Netscape is too tedious and undesirable! Even Right-Mouse and ?Send To? Netscape one-at-a-time could take weeks when mails are large. That process sends file attachments which I can?t edit.
Is there any possible way to import dbx into Netscape? Please help!!!

Somethings amiss.

Just had something try it and it worked as per the web link.

Maybe you did something odd like copy dbx files to the CD/HD and wanted it to import just that? But you didn't tell and I can't read that into your post.

Best of luck.

Netscape import file format is obsolete *mbx
Mar 18, 2005 4:57AM PST

Ok Bob here is the story,
Netscape import file format is obsolete *mbx files for discontinued OE 4.0
Starting Outlook Exprss 5.x upward runs *dbx files. Is it possible to reverse NEW file format *.dbx back to old format *.mbx??
Microsoft has formula for forward conversion [ConvertToDBX] from OLD outlook Exp4.0 mbx to NEW 5x*dbx files but not the other way around. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;231796
Why Netscape import utility still runs obsolete *.mbx files which has no backward compatibility is the problem. It has nothing to do with any configuration problems or CDs.
What is the workaround? And how do Netsacape users import *.DBX files?

Take it to Netscape then but we have Mozilla...

utility imports obsolete *mbx for Outlook Express4x
Mar 18, 2005 8:07AM PST

Yes Bob, you?re quite right, the mozilla utility is same as the one in Netscape.
The utility itself works fine but the file type it imports is *mbx for discontinued Outlook Exprss 4x. The screenshot shown is a guide for Outlook*PST files which also works as I filed in my original complain.
I?m running Outlook Express 6.0 which has same *dbx files as OE 5.x I can reinstall ie5.5 at anytime and still get outlook Exprss 5x but that will not make any difference. The mozilla utility will still not recognize *DBX mail.
Just to remind u that the mozilla utility used in Netscape had *mbx import since Netscape ver3x up to present and has NEVER changed after Microsoft switched to *dbx file format.
I don?t know what workaround mozilla/netscape users have for it it?s why I came here for help.
If Netscape tech support has a cure, they should have upgraded that utility in the first place. So what?s the point going back to pay them for help which they don?t even know?

Just did import to Mozilla Email from OE 6!
Mar 18, 2005 8:46AM PST

You are sadly mistaken. It works.

Sorry, but I can't tell why it doesn't work for you given the details in your posts. It is true I didn't import it from files, but none the less, on XP with OE6 installed and working, Mozilla imported it all as advertised.

I have a screenshot of the success if you add an email address to your profile.

Ok, forward it
Mar 18, 2005 3:20PM PST

Ok Bob, I?ve enabled email in my profile. Please forward the screenshot.
The *dbx files I was referring to means the actual emails in Outlook Express. Sorry about that.
I have been testing on Windows 98SE/ME and outlook Exprss 5x & 6x. I?ve never tried XP so I don?t know if it has anything to do with the problem.
Anyway, please forward your screenshot and thanks very much for your time.
