Question

Can map server but cannot ping

Nov 29, 2016 10:54AM PST

I have 5 computers connected to a server on a local network. Recently, one computer became unable to ping the server. I can still map the network drive, and I can ping every other computer in the network.

I am running windows 10 professional on my workstations. The server is running server 2008. My firewalls are disabled. Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer
Can be true. Why?

Ping packets can be ignored since they are not traffic a server needs to respond to. Some IT staffers just turn it off to stop users from pinging the server. Let the server serve.

There could be other reasons but it's not a sign it's broken.

Yes, but

True. The problem is one of the programs I have running requires access to the server, and though the server is mapped, the program hasn't been able to run properly since this error occurred. It's very strange.

And I'm lost here.

Please read your last reply and avoid "this error" and tell all. A ping not working has never stopped my app from working. If it did, as the author I'd have to know more then I'm back in my code to fix it.

If details are missing, since it's a business and details are this slim, you call in your IT and tell them to fix it.

Error
Nov 29, 2016 1:18PM PST

Sorry. The error I referred to was it not pinging. The program says it cannot communicate with the server. The IT guy is stumped. We've tried working with that company, uninstalling the program and its registries, then reinstalling. The company says until it connects properly with the server, it won't work.

So I can't see/read your setup.

You didn't share what program and what's in this network. For example a lot of techs failed to correct one setup that had a rather awful firewall in the router.

It only applied to WiFi which confused entry level IT and techs. Since I ran into it I added it as a note in our network forum. But look up and see I can't tell you if it applies.

-> If the IT guy is stumped, why didn't they get their guru in on the case? Once in a while they refuse to call for help. Just a thing?

Anyhow, when you can, reply to the top with full details. Otherwise I have to go with, reset the failed PC to factory conditions and retry.

And again, I can't know if someone installed a VPN, what's on WiFI, wired, router settings and such. You have to tell.

Fixed it

Thanks for the help. I was trying to avoid a factory reset, but the problem seemed to be on the local computer, so I bit the bullet. Not quite sure what caused it in the first place, but it is pinging now. Thanks for your time.

Hopefully the IT or owner

Will watch what they install and find what breaks it next time.

-> Just in case your IT doesn't know this, do not use drivers from Microsoft Update. I've lost count of the troubles from that.

I had come across that one. Tried, but didn't work. It would also be odd since it's only one computer that has this issue--the rest do just fine.

Ping
Nov 29, 2016 1:22PM PST

I forgot to mention--the server can ping the workstation, but not the other way around. As before stated, other workstations can also ping the faulty one, and it can ping them, too. It simply cannot ping the server.

Which is something I ran into on some routers.
Nov 29, 2016 1:39PM PST

You claim the firewall is down and did not tell me there are no VPNs so I'm going with new IT staff.

They often forget the router's firewall. That's next.

We have a lot of posts here but you seem to not be getting the message about details. No problem, I respect you have to keep secrets.
