Can I use my NAV rescue discs to replace missing defs?

Nov 16, 2003 7:15AM PST

When I renewed my subscription in July, Symantec didn't bother to tell me that it was no longer supporting my version of NAV (2001). Meanwhile, I'm missing about 1,000 defs, thus rendering my e-mail useless. Symantec used to have a "Hawking Tool" which restored all my defs the last time this happened, but, although I was able to download it again, it wouldn't open this time. The missing defs are all on my rescue disc set which I updated the day before this happened (problem with System Restore and WinMe).

How would I use the rescue discs if it's possible?

Am seriously thinking of purchasing Panda Titanium 2004, having read the horrendous reviews of NAV 2004 mentioned elsewhere. But before I do that, can two AV programs operate, at least temporarily, on one machine? Or, where can I get NAV 2003 as I just know there's going to be a problem getting my money back for my current update subscription? Thanks, Eandka

Eandka, Just My Opinion...But...

......I would uninstall Norton 2001 because it's becoming a dinosaur and something newer should be used. You've basically lost support from NAV on the old version. If you tried the new PANDA and you like it, use it. But if you're not really sure...., many folks prefer the FREE AVG antivirus program by Grisoft. Many users like it even though there is no technical support for the "Free" version. (Quite a few users on this forum use AVG so I'm sure you can get plenty of help here if you need it. )If you'd like to try it out, here is the link where you can download and install it. (You don't want the "Trial" version mentioned at the top of the page, but instead want the full "Free" version which downloads at the very bottom.):

http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

In addition, although some folks use two antivirus programs on the same computer, it's usually not recommended. But some users like to install a second antivirus and use it as backup. (Personally, I use "Online" scanners as backup, but each to his/her own.) IF you're going to install two on the same computer, MAKE SURE that only one actually loads at start up and runs in the background. When you're ready to use the second program, turn off the "main" antivirus so they don't conflict.

Hope this helps.

Thanks very much, Grif. Whatever av program
I install, I'l lhave to check
with the few WinMe users still around Happy
to make sure there isn't the same problem
with System Restore as with NAV. Eandka

I also have WinMe and 2 AV Programs. Only one is running and I have the other one as "backup" for several years. Never had a problem.

Marianna: Which two AV programs are you using? Do you keep one turned off or are they both running at the same
time? Eandka

Nov 19, 2003 5:07AM PST

I am running AVG 7 paid version and I have Trend Micro as "on demand" scanner on my computer.

No, ONLY AVG 7 is running at startup NOT the other AV (Trend Micro)

Eandka, Have You Tried Symantec's
Nov 18, 2003 5:21AM PST

...It's a manual method of updating your virus defintions, and I believe it will replace any missing virus defintions. If you subscription is current, I believe you can download the "Intelligent Updater" file to your desktop, then double click it to manually update the program. In addition, I believe it works for all versions of NAV. Here's the link:

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download.html

Hope this helps.

Re:Eandka, Have You Tried Symantec's

Grif: Yes. The number of my defs now reads 64,560
instead of 64,544, and the strangest thing is happening on the site. When I look up the
actual number of defs, I get the number that
Symantec is detecting on my system instead of
the actual number, presumably because I
tried something yesterday from the site and It
seems to be locked into that now. If I didn't
have some idea of the right no. of defs., I'd
be blissfully opening all my mail right now, thinking
I was protected. Eandka

Eandka, I Think Everything Is FINE !
Nov 19, 2003 5:03AM PST

Here's a quote from the Symantec link below. You'll notice that the "Intelligent Updater" actually detects "more" viruses than the "Live Update" does. Your number of 64,560 is CORRECT. The discrepancy is "theirs", not "yours". I suggest you go back to reading your mail because it appears like you are now up to date:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/

Intelligent Updater:
Virus Definitions created November 18
Virus Definitions released November 18
Norton AntiVirus Corp. Edition:
Defs Version: 51118i
Sequence Number: 26173
Extended Version: 11/18/2003 rev. 9
Total Viruses Detected: 64560

LiveUpdate:
Virus Definitions released November 17
Norton AntiVirus Corp. Edition:
Defs Version: 51117v
Sequence Number: 26160
Extended Version: 11/17/2003 rev. 22
Total Viruses Detected: 64553
____________

Hope this helps.

Re:Eandka, I Think Everything Is FINE !

Grif, when I read your message, I had a real hissy
fit because I had just done a SR back to Thursday
in the hope of getting my OE folders back as
renaming folders.dbx didn't work. This, of course, reduced my virus defs. to 0,and I got
the NAV error message (unable to initialize etc. etc.)
So I tried the Hawking Tool again and it worked
this time (praise be to you know who). Now I have 64560 defs, but on Sept. 10, I had 65,016 and on Nov.12, I had 65,494 (read from the
the NAV System Status screen-go figure). I'm not
quite ready to relax yet until I check with
another NAV user to see how many defs they've
got. Eandka

Eandka, I STILL Think It's Fine...
Nov 19, 2003 8:19AM PST

The virus defintions you have indicated for each one of the dates "increase" in the number of viruses detected as time goes by. That is as designed. Each time an update is installed, the number of viruses detected should get larger. Since you now show the same amount as the Symantec site, you should be OK. (Gees, you sure worry a lot. LOL)

Hope this helps, too.

Grif: Yes, I am a worrier, especially where
computers are concerned and I don't know what
is going on (which is most of the time). On Nov. 12,
I had 65,494 defs (and Donna posted also on
that day a similar Live Update no. of 65,530).
Even though my number agrees with what is posted
on the Symantec site now, (64,553), that's almost
1,000 fewer defs than 6 days ago. This is what I can't understand, and why I am going crazy. Eandka

Grif: I think the following solves the mystery, courtesy of an about.com post in the
Windows forum, from the following link:

http://www.pcqanda.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=2&topic_id=261526&mesg_id=261526&page=7
***
Looks like an arithmetic overflow. The 11/13 definitions have 65,541 entries, and the maximum value that an unsigned 16-bit integer can represent is 65,535, causing the total to be off by 65,536. The difference is 5, causing the virus list to show a total of "5 viruses".

Maybe this is why they eliminated the virus list from the 2004 version...

I understand Symantec is working on the fix.

I'm using NAV 2003 and as of today mine shows 64,568.

I wouldn't worry about it.
