1. Limited number of connections per second as well as total connections allowed. Microsoft has consistently reduced the connection limits from NT 4.0 Workstation to Windows 2000 Pro to XP Pro in an apparent attempt to push us towards their SERVER products.

2. It's no small task to secure Windows against attacks and keep it up to date.

What I would do is install a current version of LINUX and run it on just 512MB for the first outing. The P4 3.4GHz CPU will be loafing under this setup.

Yea I guess your right, but just a note as to why not winXP - Too buggy. If your opening up your computer to the net, you should have a more stable OS.

web server on xp

If you didn't even know that you could use your xp computer to host a web site, I imagine that installing a second operating system may be more than you want to tangle with at this point. If you decide to continue with your idea, in spite of all the negative advice you get here, you need to install a web server program on your xp computer (there are free ones available on the net just google "free web server"). You will need a reliable broadband connection that assigns you a permanent IP address so that you can register a domain name or give your students your IP address.

If the reason you want to host it yourself has anything to do with cost you should check out 34sp.com. Their hosting options start at $26 A YEAR. This includes lots of features and great support.
