Question

Can I use a coax router without coax connection?

Sep 11, 2017 2:46PM PDT

I changed internet provider and was left with a Thomson DWG849. I want to use it as a router in another room, but only have RJ45 connection available. Can conect that router using the ethernet port? Or do I need a router that has ethernet IN port.

Answer
Your Thomson devices shows as a "cable gateway"

so my guess is that it's a modem/router. Your new ISP provided you with some device, I presume. Was is also a modem/router or a simple modem? You cannot have two routers acting as DHCP servers but any eithernet ports in your Thomson device can be used to expand your wired network. You'd not use the WAN port but only the LAN ports and you'd need to turn off the DHCP server as well. More information as to what replaced this device and what you want it to do would be helpful.
