While it looks doable many folk can't do the work. Here I get that APRICOM USB 3.0 clone kit to assist in the clone step. Worth noting is that we must be ready for the old HDD to just fail at any time before or after the work starts.

What OS did the PC come with?

Pre Windows Vista HD's used IDE connections for HD. SATA replaced IDE and I'm sure it's hard to fine a SSD with an IDE interface and it for did it would be very costly.

A simply way to do the job

Sure you can, but before you get started, make sure you understand how your warranty works because any unauthorized changes on your laptop may void the warranty. Also, update BIOS settings for SSD compatibility if needed.
The regular way should be fresh install. You need to prepare a Windows installation disk to install operating system and then install the applications and games you like. This way, you only need to connect your Windows installation disk, change BIOS boot order to boot from it, and then follow the instruction to complete the clean install. Well, doing this may take a much longer time.
However, since you have used your old for 3years, to reinstall Windows and Program all over again is too cumbersome. So, I suggest you use a clone software, such as AOMEI Backupper, in order to transfer contents from HDD to SSD without reinstalling Windows and applications. For laptops usually can hold one drive, you can use a SATA-to-USB cable to connect your SSD externally, and then start cloning. When the transfer completes, remove the existing hard drive and install the cloned SSD.
