Question

Can I upgrade from W7 32-bit to W10 64-bit?

Mar 10, 2016 4:34AM PST

I'm running Windows 7 32 bit and am getting the free upgrade offer. Does the install process allow one to chose between 32 and 64 bit Windows 10 versions? If so I may opt for the 64 bit version, otherwise not interested.

No. 32-bit goes to 32-bit, 64-bit to 64-bit. To switch, you have to buy a new license.

Not "upgrade" but...

I believe you can do a 64bit clean install though. Give that a try.

Answer
Well if you have the OEM version of WIndows Installed

by a system builder or an OEM your Windows license is only for the 32 bit. Now if you have the retail version of Windows 7 both the 32 and 64 bit media is included. If you have the retail you can do an upgrade from 32 to 64 bit and the OS has to be clean installed. So you would have to do a clean install of WIndows 7 64 bit then upgrade to Windows 10 64 bit.

No matter what version you have a clean install is required and the retail license included both 32 and 64 bit and the OEM 32 and 64 bit are separate licenses.
