Can I take a HDD from 1PC and put in another?

by tailee / May 4, 2009 5:07 AM PDT

I am wondering if I can take the HDD out of my old emachine C2825 120gb and put it in my Compaq presario S4020WM. Will be compatible? Is it fairly easy to do? I am upgrading the emachine and the presario will be my kids to use for internet mostly.
Thank you for any assistance

Won't work . . .

If it boots it'll error out. No drivers on the old drive for the new machine.

You can't just move a drive and expect it to work.

Couldn't I wipe the HHD clean or ghost it?

Wipe it clean? Sure.

You can do a new install of your OS (you never said which one). You'll need drivers for audio, video, etc.

Sorry, I will break it down better. Here is what I would like to do. I have a emachine C2825 120gb that I am upgrading to a bigger hard drive. I would like to take the 120gb HDD and put it my compaq presario S4020WM. I want to clone the presario's old HHD to the 120gb after I have wiped the 120gb clean. Is this possible?

3rd party cloning software. If the hard drive is a Maxtor, go to the site and download the Max Blast cloning software (free). If either drive is a Seagate do the same for Disk Wizard.

Thanks again.
