Can I start my computer from DOS Mode in Windows XP?

SOmeone deleted my Quicken from my computer.. I have Windows XP home edition. After using Hp disk recovery to hopefully save Quicken, my Pc will now only go to DOS mode. Is there a way to restart my computer from DOS mode or some way to get my system back where it needs to be.

Recovery disks were for HP, but the operator was the problem

Actually, upon questioning, I found that the recovery disks were never used. The person responsible never put the disks in the CD ROm drive before they tried to start the recovery. The system was for an HP computer.

You appear to be dangerously close....

to wiping the drive clean and restoring back to factory specs. Quicken files containing your data would be wiped.

If I had this PC in front of me, I would try to save any QDATA files I could find. How you do it is the question. In a machine that will not boot to XP, I will move the hard drive to a working machine and place it in the second drive position. From here those files may be accessible and saved to the host hard drive. After you get everything you want to save copied off the guest drive, then recovery attempts or restoration can be tried.

Start XP from DOS ?

In reply to: Can I start my computer from DOS Mode in Windows XP?

As there is no DOS as such in XP, you can only do things with the command prompt,(i.e. that DOS like thing) and if you can get to that, you are already in Windows. For your problem, have you tried safe mode ? Try a system restore from there. Hopefully, if your using the HP recovery disks did not erase Quicken(the process of Recovery seems to be uncompleted) then you may be able to restore your system to an earlier date, one on which you still have your Quicken.
