Resolved Question

can I see desktop of another computer via network?

Dec 17, 2013 11:35AM PST

I have a Dell Inspiron One 19 that has a cracked screen. It is an all in one computer & it does not have a way to connect an external screen. There is no VGA, DVI or HDMI connection. I also have a USB to VGA thing where I could possibly use it to connect via one of the USB connections but to use that, I have to install software. Since it's currently impossible to see the desktop, I'm unable to install that software.

I'm trying to figure out if there is any way where I could see that desktop (temporarily) until I could install the software. This computer is connected to another computer through a Belkin router. I've tried doing a remote setting but I don't think I've accepted the remote configuration in that computer. I couldn't get that to work.

If I remove the hard drive, install the software using another computer where I can see the screen & then put the hard drive back into the Dell, would that work? The Dell has Windows 7 & the second computer has Vista.

I know the best option would be to replace the screen but since that will cost a lot of money, I'm trying to find another solution.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

So far no.

However if this was mine I may inventory it and see if it makes sense to get some barebones to re-cycle what I can to the next PC.

I was afraid of that...

I don't typically work on computers so I don't know a lot about them but I think I could figure out how to switch out the hard drive though. If I did buy a cheap computer, would it be possible to put this hard drive in any other computer or should I be aware of some limitations before I decide to buy another one?

Thanks for your answer...

The only limitation is

The OS and apps on the HDD should not boot and run. Many folk just get the barebones and add the drive as the second drive so they can get at files they didn't have on backups.

What I alluded to was that a PC tech or builder might see what else can be recycled and then get some bare box and recycle what they can.

But as prices have plummeted we have to nod that sometimes it just isn't going to happen and save a lot of buck.

At the office we have not built a desktop in about 4 years.

it sounds like I need to have someone else do it for me! I was trying to do this without too much expense but it sounds like it would be worth it to have someone do it for me.

Thank you for your advice, I appreciate it!

Ouch. Around here the bottom end fee is about half a new PC

yeah, that's a little high for me

let me ask you another question though. Last week, on the same day that I cracked this screen, I turned on another computer of mine & it wouldn't turn on. So, I figured it must be the power supply. I bought a new power supply & put it in. Now when I turn it on, it turns on, the fans work but my monitor says 'no signal'!! I know the monitor works because I also use it while I use my laptop! I've been trying to figure out why I can't get anything on the monitor & have read some opinions that say it may be the CPU or the motherboard.

So here's my question.....can I remove the motherboard from the Inspiron One 19 & put in the other computer? I know that one works because the only thing that's wrong with it is the cracked screen. The second computer is a tower (not all in one). It's a Dell Inspiron 537

Or if I can't do this myself, would a computer tech be able to do it for me?

Thanks.

If it fits, etc.

Sorry but I am not there to do the inspection and decide to try or not.
