General discussion

can i run a router off another router?

Sep 22, 2005 12:05PM PDT

We have Cat 5 through our whole house, which is connected to a router (wired) that runs off the cable modem. I would like to have additional ethernet connection in my room, so can I hook up a 2nd router (or ethernet switch? not sure which one) in the house to the rj45 cable via cat 5?? And what is the difference between a router and a ethernet switch?

Thanks!

But I don't offer support for it.

"And what is the difference between a router and a ethernet switch?"

They just covered that in the newbies forum.

use the switch.

Get a cheap 5-port switch and just plug the wired connection coming into the room into the "uplink" port of the switch and then use the other 4 ports for the several devices you have in your room. If 4 ports is not enough, an 8-port switch is not too much more expensive and that will give you capacity for 7 devices. If 7 is not enough... well you can buy switches with many more ports, only requires more dollars.

Don't confuse things with more than one router. It can be made to work, but you don't want to go there if you are not a network guru.
