Question

Can I make a new folder

Apr 4, 2017 9:29AM PDT

1. Again, am a novice with computers My computers has windows 10, is Dell. Can share more details if needed.
Basically since I am a photographer and keep my work in lots of folders INSIDE the Pictures folder. I would like to make a different Pictures folder. Get rid of the current one.
My Goal is to get rid of the camera roll folder that keeps showing up , no matter how many times I delete it. I have even renamed it.
Thank you ........ God Bless too.

Some folk get a little OCD about the folders but the Pictures folder is buried deep into Windows 10. Yes there are articles about moving it and so on but I'd just leave it and move my stuff to where I want as I file my pictures.

right clk on that folder, check the properties to findout where it's really located. The folders in all those "MY ......." folders are located elsewhere, because the "MY" folder is a "symlink" aka 'symbolic link' to the real folder where the items are actually at. It's also called a 'directory or NTFS junction point'

""An NTFS junction point is a symbolic link to a directory that acts as an alias of that directory. This feature of the NTFS file system offers benefits over a Windows shell shortcut (.lnk) file, such as allowing access to files within the directory via Windows Explorer, the Command Prompt, etc.""

Also, keep this in mind.

""Symbolic links can point to non-existent targets because the operating system does not check to see if the target exists.""

Camera Roll

C:\Users\User\Pictures
size: 190 bytes (190 bytes)
size on disk: 0 bytes
contains: 1 Files, 0 Folders
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Pictures
C:\Users\User
size 6.50 GB (6,982,295,912 bytes)
size on disk. 6.51 GB (6,999,810,048 bytes)
Looks like "My Pictures" of older windows is now just "Pictures" folder in W10. Same as the "My Pictures" in older window systems applies. Notice it claims just one "file". That is no doubt the link to where the pictures are actually stored. When you clk on the "Pictures" folder, does it have some option to add other folders "into" it?
When you try to add a folder, does it let you do so directly, or have you "browse" to the added folder? If the latter, then it's adding a symlink into the "Pictures" folder instead, and means of course the actual folder itself is elsewhere, or if not, then the symlink still existes pointing to a non existent folder. Right clk on the "camera roll " folder and find out where it really is in the properties of it. You can then go there and remove it, if that's what you want. If it still then shows as a symlink in the "Pictures" folder, you can remove the link then.
Ah, they did change from "MY......." folders, dropping "MY"
The 'official' My Pictures folder is sometimes called Pictures and sometimes My Pictures, depending on what program you use to look at it. No problem at all, not important at all.
I fully agree with what Proffitt said. Don't mess with what Windows does, don't care about what it does, just make your own folder (with subfolders as you see fit) to store your pictures on whatever drive you want and name it what you want.
I shouldn't use DVD (or external hard disk, or USB-stick, or even the cloud) as storage. I'd use it only for backup and save all you want to save on two folders on two different PC's (one original, one backup) in your home network. Use DVD or external only for things you don't mind to lose.
one last question. I thought of changing the name of the camera roll folder, as well. Basically it feels like a bug, a fly, and just bugs me. It isn't bad or..................... just an author, photographer, artist. and thank you all. I really admire computer people. YOU GRASP ALOT MORE about this than i do. HEY if anyone ever wants prayer, i will pray for you. Lots get healed and even dream interpretations. Yes I am on facebook. GOD BLESS Great Blue Heron piercing Blue Gill
