Question

Can I Have My Single-Tab Multiple-Picture Viewing Back??

Aug 11, 2017 3:11PM PDT

Congrats, I have a new computer - fittingly running a WIN 10. Didn't cost too much. Frustratingly enough, one certain significant feature that was fairly convenient on my previous system (7 was it?) is now no longer. And I'm talking about the ability to select a batch of multiple JPEG files from within a given folder, thereby having them (by pressing Enter) displayed in JUST ONE "Windows Photo Viewer" tab, allowing me to browse thru JUST THOSE I SELECTED upon clicking the right/left arrows... Now with 10, I rather get the selected images opening in separate tabs! I.e. if I select 10 images, 10 tabs will reasonlessly open up on my screen. This is a significant downside of the praised new version of the OS... Can anyone please advise me on just how to abolish this feature and get back the single-tab display of Photo Viewer when running multiple pictures? Thanks in advance. Be blessed! /Orrling

Clarification Request
I have to write no and yes.
Aug 11, 2017 3:20PM PDT

This to me is no if you want it to be native to Windows and what Microsoft supplies.

I find that folk forget that Windows is an OS with a bunch of what should we call them? Demonstration applications? Yes, that will do nicely here.

And yes, if you are open to other applications. I'd try Irfanview first and if you can't get it setup the way you want, ask in their forum. Example from long ago at https://irfanview-forum.de/showthread.php?t=7863

Thanks for your response, I'm a non-hitech user and need to be sure I understand you right - are you saying that with Windows Photo Viewer I can no longer get the single-tab viewing? --And should resort to employing other image players? (with which single-tab viewing can work?) And then, why would Microsoft do that?!? So, OK, if I pick Irfanview should I/can I set it as the default player for all types of still images? Got a quick link for just getting the app? Thanx a lot.

Answer
The program used needs that capability

and you then have to change the file association in windows to have all jpg and jpeg images open in it.

I'm sorry, I'm a non-hitech user and could not understand what you meant and overall how to solve the issue Sad Can you specify any clearer steps if there are? Thanx

I can't mess with my registry Sad !
Won't even start.. However when I try to ask Windows to alter the program used for picture viewing I get this message saying I need to change my built-in administrator... or what ever ... can't figure it Sad

Clarification of myself
Aug 12, 2017 6:27AM PDT

I mean that - either I select the "Photos" app or Irfanview (when I have it installed) that blue restriction window will pop up saying "This app can't open. Photos can't be opened using the built-in administrator account (whatever in the world that means...) . Sign in with a different account and try again".

By saying this I also clarify that I am NOT "stuck" on Windows Photo Viewer, I can (and will) switch to any friendly program that will support my habit of opening multiple image-files in a single respective tab.
But this is also to clarify that I lack the competence of decyphering and manipulating the given built-in system structure (I am open to follow any instruction by you guys tho)

Hi. Windows Photo Viewer is already set as my default image playing app. The problem is WIN 10 apparently doesn't enable viewing multiple selected pics in a single WPV tab but allots a distinct tab per each individual selected pic.

Sorry, but it works with me in Windows 10 Creator Update.

The steps I did:
1. I 'installed' Windows Photo Viewer via a .reg-file I had downloaded last year from some Internet site.
2. I opened one picture via Right click>Open With>Choose another app>Windows Photo Viewer and checked the "Always use this app" checkbox.
3. I opened one picture with a double click. It opened in WPV indeed, not in the Photo's app (the default in Windows 10).
4. I selected 3 pictures in the same folder, and right click showed Preview as the default choice from the right menu. That opened those 3 pictures in WPV in such a way that I could use the arrow keys to browse through them.
5. It doesn't work with doubleclicking on one of the three selected. That unselects the other 2 and only opens the one I clicked on.

If you did the same as I did, it's unclear why it doesn't work.

Your reply and assistance are very appreciated, thanks. Happy Entering this page tonight I was about to just conclude putting a "OK Thank you guys for trying, guess I'll solve this some day soon"... but there was your (once again) elaborate comment. And I must say, it nevertheless isn't working for me here...
I mean, I can select 3 or however many images from a folder as per your clause 4 and the right-click menu will allow me to "Preview" but once again, this option runs all the selected pics in a fitting number of separate WPV tabs instead of one... (--and each tab displays the FULL content of the folder and not just the selected items..) Aas I've indicated already, the default here has already been set to WPV, so probably this is not the issue. If you look at my older comment titled "Clarification of myself" I've indicated that I'm not even necessarily particularly 'loyal' to WPV (-it's just a very familiar and cosy one) but am precluded somehow with my new system from shifting to another defaultive viewer app (be it "Photos" or any) which has to do with the registry or administrator-status I guess... I had never had to download a .reg-file and don't even know what that is... /o

Hi. Windows Photo Viewer is already set as my default (and only possible xcept photoshop) app. Even if I want to change it to another, I seemingly can't and get a "This App Can't Open" msg. I would have no problem installing an alternative app such as Irfanview or using "Photos".

Re: only possible

That's strange that it's the only possible choice. The Windows 10 default is the Windows 10 Photos app (Photos), and that should always be visible, and so would Paint (and Paint 3D if you installed it).
It seems something is very wrong with your installation of Windows.

I even see Microsoft Office Picture Manager (because I have Office 2007 installed), and of course Windows Photo Viewer, since I installed that, like you see Adobe Photoshop.

Hi there, can't tell you what was done wrong with the installation. Wish I could. Not only was I not the one that installed it (rather got the PC as-is from the shop) but I also lack most techy notions to even know that something's wrong when it is... Happy Certain things I do notice. - Did You Know?#1 - When I need to reboot (or when the comp reboots itself), when the reboot finishes and Windows is up again my entire meticulously-arranged desktop item array is messed. Every time again. (In 7, it would stay always as I arranged it.) Did You Know?#2 - In average once a day the PC suddenly is "stuck" i.e. the mouse won't move and keyboard won't be responded.. Did You Know?#3 - The whole actual process of moving my hard disk's content from the old comp to the new one (-files and programs which obviously need to migrate) somehow did not incorporate formatting - that is, I got the old programs I used to have on my older system on the new one without a hitch of needing to re-install them! That was weird for me... But that technician in the shop said it was normal for 10. I then also asked him to make WPV my default for still images as I couldn't click-open images at all... something about my administratorship status or smthng like that.
* and yes I get "Paint" too for optional Open-with viewing. But "Photos" no. ("Can't Open".)
Thanks Happy

About item 2
Aug 15, 2017 2:07PM PDT

Hard lockups have many causes. I can't tell you which one it is given the discussion and even if there was more, it's only my best guess that has to be tried to determine if that was it.

As to item 3, no one I know will guarantee program migration. There are apps like PCMover (may be under new ownership or name) but I found apps refusing to move or move and fail. Microsoft and other companies do not consider moving apps to be something we need today.

Moving files? No question we can do that.

Then I'm afraid you'll have to ask Microsoft. Try their forum: answers.microsoft.com.
