General discussion

Can I go back to Vista now I have 7??

Oct 27, 2009 8:54PM PDT

I have installed Windows 7 Professional via a download. I previously had Windows Vista Home Premium and much preferred it. I have been having multiple problems with compatibility issues and want to uninstall Windows 7 and got back to Vista. Is that possible? How do I do it?

You can try

I assume you upgraded not a clean install?

I'm not sure which compatibility issues you would be having. Vista and Windows 7 are like 90% the same thing.

It could be if you upgraded to 64bit, not sure.

If you have the Vista DVD you can always just install it.

It allways nice to create an image before you do an upgrade

Acronis and Norton Ghost are 2 products that make a complete system backup or image. Looke for image software and not just backup software because image software back ups system files and backup software just backs up docs, pics, music and not system files.

Reinstall Vista

Do you have your original Vista installation discs? Follow these directions to reinstall Vista: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Installing-programs-frequently-asked-questions.

You shouldn't have any compatibility issues if you upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista- before you go back you may want to check your drivers for updates and check software compatibility: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/default.aspx. The general rule is if it ran on Vista it will run on Win 7.

reinstall vista

there are compatability issues with 7 - a few of my apps no longer work or freeze because there isn't a windows 7 update for them yet from the manufacturer of the app. Windows Washer for example does not work on 7 - Portrait Professional is now full of bugs that freeze you out, although it does open. I'm having to now re-install Vista - gutted, i like 7

Unfortunately, you are correct.

Yes, the general rule is that if it worked with Vista it will work with Windows 7. Unfortunately, there are so many programs out there that it just is not possible for every program to be compatible. I'd say your best bet is contacting the manufacturer of the programs and inquiring if there is a Windows 7 update in the future.
