Can I get web sites to fit window?

Mar 4, 2004 12:52AM PST

More and more updated web sites (like MSN, Yahoo) no longer open up to fit my desktop window. I have to scroll side to side to see the whole screen. Is there a way to get them to open up to fit the screen? Running win95 and I.E. 4.0. on a Compaq preserio 4540.

What resolution setting are you using?
800x600 is easy to read, but, limits the field of view.
A resolution of 1024x768 should fix the problem.
Try changing these settings.
On your "desk top"
right click-choose-PROPERTIES / SETTINGS-in the SCREEN AREA (lower right) slide the bar and try a few settings.
Hope this helps.
Let me know.

Correct but impractical

With that machine, he will likely have a 14" maybe 15" monitor. He will find 1024*768 desperately small to read without risking eye strain.

Besides which, it depends on how the web pages are written. With any of my sites, they will fit any display, though designed for 800*600 up, because I use proportions for the fit. Many others however, use fixed widths for the display to ensure the placement they want, with a target minimum display size in mind so those below it will suffer.

Then maybe a larger monitor is in order.
I use a 19", set at 1280x1024, very comfortable for me.
I would think a 17" set at 1024x768 would help.
A 17" monitor could be bought new for less than $100.00.

Tks to all for the various suggestions. Changing the resolution works, but I don't have variable control. The slide bar only jumps the res between 600x800 and 1024x768 which makes things too small. Looks like I may have to upgrade. I'm in denial.

Perhaps just a band-aid.

This is based upon a 17" monitor and old eye-balls.

Set your screen res to 800x600.

When the web page opens play with view/text size to see if you can find something that fits most of the time.

Good suggestion Bob.

I have a site which uses a cascading style sheet for the layout, including fixing font settings. Faced with site design like that, adjusting the browser text size won't help as CSS overrides user preferences. So while Bob's reply is practical in many cases, it still has limitations.

In the long term, yours is the better though expensive option. Basically, the guy is stuck with a machine in need of hardware upgrade, which isn't a very economical way to fix things.

there is a registry edit for default page load. I'll try to find it.
