Can I get a Win95 program to work on WinXP?

Jun 15, 2004 3:35AM PDT

I have some software that I want to run on XP. It says Win95 or better on the software but I can't get them to run.
Is there some way I can use them on Win95?

I'll answer no to the question. But maybe the forum could help if you told the NAME and MAKER of the software titles as well as what stopped it from working. "Error messages" and such help a lot.

Right now, the outlook is grim.

I had two programs I wanted to run. One was a electronic tutor program made by Comptons Learning co. The other was a pinball game from GT Interactive. I use to use these alot when I had Win98 before I upgraded to XP. When I try to install the electronics one says 'Runtime error 217 at 00082A5E' and the pinball one says it will only run under Win95. But they both say on the box Win95 or better.

I haven't upgraded to XP yet, but my tech friend keeps wanting me to go XP and says I don't have to worry about my older programs, (some DOS, some Win95 and Win9Cool. He says XP has a built-in simulation.

I can't check this out because I don't have access to an XP machine, but I think he said all you have to do is right-click the program's icon, go to properties, and select 'use the appropriate simulation mode'.

On my Win98, in the DOS program icons (right-click) the properties section has a tab for "program" and in the 'advanced' section it has a box that can be checked which says "suggest MS-DOS mode as necessary". So you should look for something like that (you might even check the HELP on XP Start Menu (?) to find how to use the simulation mode.

Hope this helps to point you in the direction of what/where to look.....

Your tech friends are making it sound easy to run older programs under XP and it isn't. XP does have a built-in compatibility feature but, some older programs won't install in order to use it. And, there is no guarantee that the program will run properly if you do get them installed and try to use that feature.
