can i connect my sterio speakers to dvd player

i have amw s99 dvd player, can i connect my sterio speakers to my dvd player with rca jacks. is there any restriction on how many watt speakers can be connected with it. it has one optical jack also, can you tell me what is the function of that.

Is this rca connection for speakers or is it for connecting to an amplifier or receiver? If it is for an amp/recv then it problaly doesn't have enough power; but if you have an intergrated ampl/speaker unit, then yes you could problaly be ok.
