Can I connect more than one computer to an external hdd?

Jun 10, 2006 12:09PM PDT

I am planning on purchasing a Maxtor OneTouch III Turbo 1 TB external hard drive. It has two Firewire 800, a Firewire 400 and a USB 2.0 connection in the back.

I would like to be able to connect this external hard drive to two seperate computers. I have a G5 and a Dell laptop. I plan on connecting the G5 to the Maxtor with the Firewire 800 connection and I plan on connecting thhe Dell laptop with either the Firewire 400 or USB 2.0 connection.

Is it possible to have both of these computers in this type of setup access files at the same time off of this same drive?

Only across a network.

You may not connect both at the same time to the drive's connections. However you can share the volume from either OS.

If I can't network this drive and make it available to two computers at the same time, then is there a product ou there in the under $1,500 range that will do this? I am streaming DV video.

Look at gigabit networking boxes.

From memory, Dlink and Buffalo have boxes you can put drives into and put on your Gigabit LAN. That might be OK.

You'll have to look up which boxes have gigabit networking as well as the model numbers but they are out there.

Cheers,

Bob
