Question

Can I burn a cd to transfer from iMac to MacBook

Apr 26, 2012 6:16AM PDT

OK, I got my MacBook home only to find there are some folders on the desktop of the iMac that didn't get transferred over. I need to know if I can burn a read/write cd to transfer them to the new machine? One of the folders contains info re: my wedding which is in a little over 3 weeks. Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Old Granny Lola

Answer
I'd do that now.

But this does beg the question about your backup situation. I find many only learn the backup lesson the hard way.

Answer
Can't "find" cd on iMac
Apr 29, 2012 10:32AM PDT

Ok, I am duly chastised.... I have tried inserting a cdrw and a plain cd into my iMac and it sometimes ejects after a short time of grinding away also, the icon does not appear on the desktop. At the moment, a plain cd is somewhere in the bowels of the iMac. I have shut it down in total frustration. Until I took it to the Apple store to have the data transferred from it to my new MacBook, it had been working. I don't suppose there's much I can do. And, please, Bob, don't say "I told you so." <grin> Thanks to all for your help.

I'd like to hear more details.... on how to connect the two machines together. Just connect both to the internet, or run a cable between them...or both? I need step by step instructions. Drop Box I found online. They also didn't transfer my daily journal from 2006, my old browser, Firefox, nor any of the bookmarks. I am so angry with them.... but, that's a whole nuther story. Thanks again.

Sorry but what step did not make sense?

I can't guess what happened when you tried Dropbox. So I can't re-write all the step by steps I found on the internet about this.

And computers are complex enough that we get in over our heads we go to the store and ask them to do the work for us.

I had not yet tried Dropbox

that's what did not make sense, but did get both machines downloaded with Dropbox and connected this morning. Mr. Dropbox seems to be doing his thing. One question.... He sent a message that "all files are up to date," but he's still downloading stuff. What are the chances of me going over my space limit? And.... can I do other things online while Dropbox is running?

When I stated above that "they had not transferred all of my data, I was talking about the tech at the Apple store. You bet I go to the store and ask them to do the work for me.... I paid an arm and leg for this thing, it's the least they can do. And I say they did a miserable job. I filled out their survey and gave my phone number for them to call if they wish.

Thanks,

Install Dropbox on both computers.
Apr 30, 2012 8:57AM PDT

If you can only connect one computer to the internet at a time, that's OK.
Just do install it on each machine.
Connect the machine that you want to copy FROM, to the internet.
Put the files that you want to move, into the Dropbox folder.
You will not the little icon spinning around while it uploads the files.
Once done, connect the other machine to the internet
Go to the dropbox site and you will find all the files from the old machine are there.
Now drag them onto the new machine and that's it

I must not have been very clear
May 1, 2012 6:41AM PDT

This morning, May 1, 2012, I got both my iMac and Macbook connected to the internet, (at the same time) downloaded Dropbox to both. I didn't have to go to the site, I just dragged the folders from the iMac desktop to the Dropbox icon and checked my Macbook and found they were being downloaded to it. Pretty neat little application, me thinks. I tried to watch the video you mentioned, Bob, but it was so blurry I couldn't see it well and the man talked so fast I couldn't follow him. I will go to the Help Center to see if I can learn anything there. Thanks to you both.
