General discussion

can i 'batch' rename a whole bunch of files

Aug 6, 2007 12:58AM PDT

via explorer?

i have about 300+ files that i have to rename, without losing the 'gist' of whats in the file...

right now i have a folder with:
M_LA_N12.200
M_LA_08.200
M_LB_08N.200 etc

because all the files begin with M_L (and i have to save more and more 'definitions' in the file name) i need the 'space' -as you can see, i'm limited to the 8.3 file name

i tried on one folder that had -luckily for me- 7 files by selecting all, clicking rename and deleting the M_L in the first file

the result was catastrophic.... 7 files that showed as
~(1).200,
~(2).200 etc.....

i asked our IT guy and he said "what's the problem?, rename each file manually....."

any and all help will be MUCH appreciated

jonah

For those with some programming experience, this shouldn't be a very difficult thing to do. Couple lines of Perl code is about all it would take.

For those without any programming experience, there are a number of programs that will also do this. Whether or not any of them are free I can't say.
