Can/How do I have two internet dial up connections/providers

Jul 30, 2004 2:10AM PDT

Currently I have highspeed cabel modem connection to internet, I need to use my laptop away from my connection when I travel. Is it possible to have a second connection/provider and if so how? I want to use the modem when I travel. I guess I will have to pay for two ISP's since my cabel modem company has limited service areas.

You can have as many dialup connections as you want (but only one at a time, of course). Any program using Internet (like IE and Outlook Express) will use the one you've dialed. Simply make shortcuts on the desktop like "Dial AOL", "Dial myISP1", "Dial myISP2". Don't forget to close the connection when you're done.

No problem at all, I've done it regularly. If the LAN (cable connection) is active, that one will be used.

Hope this helps.

Technically it is easy to set up, just go into the control panel, into network and dialup connections and set up a new connection with the new ISP telephone number, The problem is going to be getting an ISP that allows roaming.

That's easy enough, get an AOL account. You can use the AOL account when your on the road or you can use it when connected via broadband. AOL is the most obvious, but Earthlink, Yahoo or any big ISP should be nation wide if not international.

Setting it up on the computer isn't that difficult.

Most cable service providers have free modem access when away from home. You will have to go through the setup process for the area code you travel too if they don't offer a 800 access number. You can probable get access numbers in advance. Check it out in the members section. You might have a conflict from your modem card while useing the cable modem, but you can disable the card when it is not needed.

I have SBC Global and they have a deal going now for $50.00 monthly, which allows more than one user in the household to be logged on simultaneously. Suggest you contact your ISP and ask if they have this type of service. Paying two separate providers shouldn't be necessary.
