Question

Can connect (cable/wifi) but no internet

Jul 17, 2017 4:34PM PDT

Suddenly the computer is not able to connect to internet, sometimes I can connect to router, but never to actual webpages. On the phone and other PC, internet is working fine. If Ethernet cable is connected, it shows unidentified network. If wifi - connected, no internet.

Just spent 4 hours trying various tips like: win - CMD - ipconfig release and renew, which both bring up errors, DNS change to automatic or 8888/8844. Uninstalling adapter in device manager and scanning for changes, nothing helped yet. Also did a factory reset on router.

Thanks for the help.

Answer
There are reasons for this.

If you google it you find the common issues are expired antivirus, incorrect date and time and trojans. It's rarely something else.

Tell more.

It's not 8888 but 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 for DNS setting in your router.

Problem fixed.

Can't believe how stupid I am.

I installed NetLimiter and reduced bandwidth of Windows host process to 1b/s, with aim to stop all the auto updates, but this stopped internet completely, so disabling NetLimiter fixed it for me, way to waste 5 hours haha.

I can honestly say...

....that's the first time I've seen that since the days of zmodem settings on dialup.

It's like a magic potion.

I didn't read about NetLimiter until this post so I would not guess that was in the brew.
